Cozy up with Mug Shot!

Mug Shot is the second book in the Java Jive series and I was so excited to receive a copy from Netgalley.  Caroline Fardig has quickly become one of my favorite authors.  If you haven’t started this series yet be sure to check out the first book in the series on Goodreads by clicking here:  Death Before Decaf.

Former musician Juliet Langley has barely had a day off since taking over management of the coffeehouse owned by her best friend, Pete Bennett. But there’s always more to be done—such as prepping for the annual Holiday 5K Race organized by Pete’s snobby socialite girlfriend, Cecilia Hollingsworth. This year, Java Jive has a booth right at the finish line, and since Juliet and Cecilia don’t always see eye to eye, everything has to be perfect. Nothing can go wrong. Nothing . . . like Juliet stumbling over Cecilia’s dead body on the morning of the race.

When Pete is arrested for Cecilia’s murder, Juliet sets out to clear his name. She’ll do whatever it takes—even if it means standing up to the police, her ex-boyfriend, and the grande dames of Nashville. But there isn’t enough espresso in the world for the greatest challenge in her path: infiltrating Nashville’s high society to uncover the hidden hotbed of scandal without running afoul of the law herself. With her last dime staked on Pete’s bail bond and her staff growing jittery, the last thing Juliet needs is for her trademark temper to land her behind bars. As time drips away, Juliet needs to crack this case before the killer comes back for another shot

I’m always worried when I read the first book in a series and I absolutely love it, I mean what are the chances the second book can live up to it?!  I mean how many murders can realistically happen in a coffee shop?  That was why, right from the beginning, I was pleased with the way this mystery started.  It didn’t seem super unlikely that Juliet somehow got wrapped up in another murder.  Unluckly? Definitely!  I just love Juliet as our heroine, shes unlucky, has  a temper, and fiercely loyal to her friends.  Overall I find her very relatable.  The more I read about her the more I think I’d love to be her friend, I’d want her in my corner if I was in trouble for sure!

In the second installment of the Java Jive Mysteries we find Juliet’s best friend and former, maybe, love interest Pete in some hot water.  His girlfriend, the annoying and unpleasant, Cecilia has been murdered and Pete is the prime suspect.  There’s no shortage of suspects which made me worried that I’d figure out who the killer was early on and spoil all the fun.  Luckily, that was not the case.  I was surprised at every new revelation, which is  a great quality in a cozy mystery.  Her sleuthing puts her in the path of everyone’s favorite sexy cop, Ryder, again.  I have to say that  I love the atypical romance in this story.  There isn’t a typical love at first sight type of thing.  There also isn’t an overdone love triangle thing either.  Juliet’s love life is complicated just as things tend to be in real life.  Juliet’s life can sometimes be a complicated mess and that extends to her love life as well.  With that being said, I feel like the reader will be very satisfied with the way the romance and the mystery is resolved by the end of the book.

I just can’t say enough about how much I love this series and this author.  The stories and all the characters pull you in and keep you reading.  Caroline Fardig has quickly become an author that I love and I will not hesitate to pick up the next book in this series or anything else she comes out with.  So, if you haven’t started this series yet I highly recommend picking it up.  Also, be sure to check out her Lizzie Hart series too!
