The Book Club Murders…a review!

It’s no secret that I love cozy mysteries but my favorite type of cozy mysteries are ones that have something to do with books…libraries, bookstores, and book clubs!  So, as soon as I saw this one I knew I had to read it.  I’m so happy I was able to get the chance to review it.  Let’s start off with the blurb…

summaryoverlookIn a charming cozy mystery series debut, Leslie Nagel’s irrepressible small-town heroine finds that her fellow mystery book club members may be taking their Agatha Christie a bit too literally—and murder a bit too lightly.

Charley Carpenter has poured heart and soul into her clothing store, Old Hat Vintage Fashions. She’ll do anything to make it a success—even join the stuffy Agathas Book Club in order to cultivate customers among Oakwood, Ohio’s wealthy elite.

Although mixing with the most influential women in town has its advantages, Charley finds the endless gossip a high price to pay. But after two women with close ties to the Agathas are brutally murdered, everyone falls under threat—and suspicion. When key evidence indicates that both murders are the work of the same hand, Charley realizes that the killer has arranged each corpse in perfect imitation of crime scenes from the Club’s murder mystery reading list. She uses her membership in the Club to convince Detective Marcus Trenault to use her as an inside informant. Not that he could stop her anyway.

Intelligent, fearless, and every bit as stubborn as Marc is, Charley soon learns the Agathas aren’t the only ones with secrets to protect. Passions explode as she and Marc must race against time to prevent another murder. And if Charley’s not careful, she may find herself becoming the killer’s next plot twist.

reviewoverlayI absolutely loved this book.  Charley is an extremely likeable main character and I love that she owns a vintage clothing shop.  I love that there’s a book club in the book, I love reading about what characters in a book would choose to read.  Basically, I’m obsessed with books.  I also loved that the members of the book club weren’t all really good friends.  It made for an eclectic and interesting group, very fun to read.  Oh, let’s not forget that the book club calls themselves “The Agathas”  LOVE IT!

As I read this book I noticed it was different from most of the cozy mysteries I’ve read.  It seemed more fast paced and exciting.  Lot’s of cozy mysteries are in sleepy little towns with close-knit residents…I liked that this town did not come across as sleepy and neither did its residents.  There is a romance, which is not unusual, but the romance blossoming between Charley and Marcus was quite fun to read.  I loved trying to figure out the mystery along with them and I was happy to be surprised at the end.

Basically I loved everything about this book.  One of the only downfalls is that I wish I could read the next one right away!  I also felt like I should mention that I did come across a swear or two…shocking I know.  It didn’t bother me at all as it fit in with the story and dialogue but I know some people try to avoid that in their cozies.  Overall though, I would recommend this to anyone looking for a great mystery because it’s that and more.
